Creating AI Artwork for Laser Engraving: Tips for Better Results

We've noticed a significant rise in customers using AI-generated images for engraving projects, so we decided to put together a few tips to help you get the best possible results with this technology.

Designing and creating something our customers truly love is extremely important to us. With custom engraving, one of the hardest parts can simply be figuring out exactly what someone has pictured in their head from a written description alone. That is where AI can be incredibly helpful.

AI has opened up new ways to experiment with designs without needing extensive artistic or design skills. More importantly, it gives us something visual to work from. An AI-generated image can show us the style, layout, subject matter, and overall feel you are going for, even if the image itself is not quite ready to engrave.

The biggest thing to remember is that an image that looks great on a screen may not translate well to laser engraving. Tiny details, soft shading, complicated textures, and very thin lines can disappear or blend together once engraved. A few simple changes to your AI prompt can make a huge difference.

Start With Black-and-White AI Artwork for Laser Engraving

When creating AI artwork for laser engraving, starting with a simple black-and-white design can make the process much easier.

Color often helps separate objects and details in a digital image. Once that color is removed, those same details can suddenly blend together. Starting with black and white makes it much easier to see whether the design itself will work well for engraving.

Tell AI It Is for Laser Engraving

Giving AI the intended use can help it create something much closer to what engraving can actually reproduce.

Instead of simply asking:

“Create a ship with palm trees and a sunset.”

Try:

“Create a black-and-white design for laser engraving featuring a ship, palm trees, and sunset. Use bold, clean shapes, solid black and white areas, and simplified details.”

Words like bold, clean, simplified, high contrast, and solid black and white can be especially helpful.

Include the Finished Size

A design for a 12” plaque can contain much more detail than one being engraved on a 3” ornament. The smaller the finished engraving, the simpler the artwork usually needs to be. If you know the approximate finished size, include it in your prompt:

“Create this for laser engraving on a 4-inch round ornament. Keep all important details large enough to remain visible at that size.”

This helps AI understand that tiny decorative elements and extremely fine lines may not be appropriate for the finished piece.

Don't Worry If It Isn't Perfect

You do not need to create production-ready artwork yourself. If an AI-generated image captures what you are picturing, send it to us. Even if it cannot be engraved exactly as generated, it still gives us a very useful visual reference. We can see what you like, which elements matter most, and the overall direction you want to go.

From there, we can determine what may need to be simplified, adjusted, redrawn, or removed so the finished engraving looks its best.

Keep Expectations Realistic

Sometimes artwork needs to change slightly in order to engrave well. In some cases, an AI-generated image works best as inspiration rather than as the final engraving file.

The goal is not always to reproduce every tiny detail exactly as it appears on the screen. The goal is to take the idea you love and turn it into something that looks great on the finished piece.
